FAQ

Buying Article PDFs, Reprints, or Permissions

What is the difference between a PDF and a Reprint?
A PDF is an electronic version which can be viewed or downloaded for future reference. This is the most cost-effective method of purchasing an article. PDFs must be viewed with proper software installed on your computer. Adobe's Acrobat Reader is available free from our Web site or directly from Adobe.com.

A Reprint is the paper version which is mailed to you directly. There is shipping time to consider as well as the additional shipping expense.

What are "Permissions"?
MIT SMR's articles are copyrighted. If you wish to make copies or distribute any copyrighted materials, you must pay a Permissions fee based on the number of copies being produced or distributed and be granted Permission.

I bought an article, but I'm not able to open the PDF link. What is wrong?
Do you have the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed? You can download this directly through the Adobe Web site at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. You may also need to upgrade your browser software (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.) for the Reader to launch properly from the download link.

Other ways to troubleshoot this problem are:

  • Clear your browser's cache or temporary internet files folder.
  • Save the PDF to your computer, and then open the file.
  • Open the Adobe Reader software first, then open the PDF document you downloaded.

If you close the "Thank You" page on which the download link displays, you will not be able to download the PDF from your browser. However, you will receive an e-mail receipt displaying the same download link.

I keep getting an error message saying that I have exceeded the download limit. What is this?
For security reasons, the PDF link has an imposed limit which only allows you to access the article for a period of four days from the time of purchase. It is also important that you single-click on the link to download the article, and SAVE it to your computer at the time of purchase for future reading. By doing this, you will also avoid exceeding the maximum number of clicks on the download link.

Why do I get an error message when entering my credit card information?
Payment processing errors can occur for several reasons. Here are some common problems:

  • You entered a ZIP code in your shopping cart which is different from the ZIP code on your customer information screen. Please note that the ZIP code field in the shopping cart is related to the shipping address. If you enter a different ZIP code in the customer checkout screen, you will receive an error.
  • Always click on the "Update" button in the shopping cart when making changes to the ZIP code and shipping method (if applicable).
  • Make sure that the ZIP codes are the same, and be sure to check the box in the customer checkout screen. If not the same, fill in the appropriate information on the customer checkout screen.
  • You incorrectly entered your credit card number, expiration date, or name on the credit card.
  • If using a corporate purchasing card, there may be restrictions on the card that prevent you from transacting with an academic institution. Please check with your institution's purchasing card administrator to rectify this problem, or use a different credit card.

Can I distribute PDFs via e-mail?
To distribute our material in electronic format (as well as hardcopy format) you must purchase permission to copy. When transmitting electronically, you must inform each recipient that MIT SMR's material is copyrighted, and no further reproduction or distribution can be made without the express written consent of M IT Sloan Management Review. If you have additional questions, please contact us.

Can I post your articles on my company's Web site?
Posting our articles is allowed only on secure, password-protected intranet sites. The permission fee is determined by the number of people accessing the article. Posting MIT SMR's material on publicly-accessible internet sites is strictly prohibited.

Why do the reprints/PDFs have gray-shaded boxes?
For copyright reasons, we do not include the journal's illustrations in PDFs or paper reprints. You can be assured, however, that the text remains the same, and any graphics, such as tables or charts, will be included.

Why do I need to enter a ZIP code if I'm purchasing a PDF?
The ZIP code field is required for all purchases, regardless of whether you order a PDF or other product. Be sure that the ZIP code in both the shopping cart and the customer check out screen are the same. If not the same, you will receive an error message unless you enter separate shipping and billing information.

Can you offer custom reprints with my company's logo?
Yes! We are more than happy to assist you in developing a custom reprint for your company function or presentation. Please contact Brandon Hartford at 617-253-9634 or e-mail for more information.

Can I purchase a back issue?
Back issues are sold directly from our Web site. We do not stock every issue, so availability is limited. You can find available issues by searching our Web site by "Articles by Issue/Date". You can then click on the given issue/date and see if the individual print issue is available for purchase.

Subscription Questions

How do I get to online subscription service?
Go to our subscription service page and click on the function you would like to accomplish (pay bill, change address, etc.).

I need to speak to someone about my subscription. Whom do I call?
Our subscriptions are serviced by an off-site service bureau. It is best to call the service bureau directly, as they keep all records and can instantly access your subscription. Call 800-876-5764 or email slon@neodata.com. International callers call 303-604-7435. The only subscriber questions that the service bureau cannot handle are one about online access to articles. Please see the FAQs below.

Online Access for Individual Subscribers

What is online access to articles?
Online access to read the past 24 months of articles is a component of our basic subscription. All paid subscribers can gain access to the archival articles.

When should I receive a password for online access?
If you are a new subscriber to MIT SMR and paid for a subscription online, you will be sent an e-mail which will give you the password needed to log in. If you paid through the mail, you will be e-mailed a password within 2 weeks of your payment being received.

I have been a subscriber to MIT SMR for many years but have not received a password. What should I do?
If you started a paid subscription prior to our introduction to online access, you can easily register for online access at our subscription service page. Be sure that your subscription account has a current/correct e-mail address as this acts as your "log-in" name.

How do I change the password you provided me?
Go to our home page and log in with the e-mail and password you were sent. The option "Change Password" will appear on the nav bar. Click and fill in the boxes to change your password.

Online Access for Libraries

How do libraries get online access to articles?
Online access for libraries is available to all subscribers who have paid the institutional rate. To obtain access, librarians should go to http://sloanreview.mit.edu/smr/subscribe/libraries/ and scroll down to reach the “Institutional License Agreement.” Click to download, sign the agreement and mail or fax to our office. Please be sure to enter your address on the agreement as it appears on your subscription label. We will check our subscription records to ensure your library subscribes, and then activate your online access. This will generate an e-mail to you with a password and link to log in and enter our library administration site. You can then enter the IP ranges for your institution.

I’ve sent in my library’s license agreement but have not received an e-mail from MIT SMR.
This is because we were unable to find your subscription account in our file. The possible reasons for this are as follows:

  1. Your print subscription address is different from the address you provided in the license agreement. (Our online access database is built from our print subscription records, the online access is linked to this record, and we use this to confirm that your library is a subscriber.) This could be because:
    1. Your order comes to us from your agent with only an agent account code and a common agent address. This is especially true of Swet’s customers. Please forward us your agent-generated account code.
    2. Your subscription delivery address differs from your office address. Please forward us the address to which your print subscription is delivered.
  2. Your subscription order is still being held by your agent, and has not reached our fulfillment service bureau yet. Please check with your agent that your order has been processed.
  3. Your library did not pay the current institutional rate, which is required for online access. These rates are:
    • $187 US
    • $218 Canada
    • $269 Rest of World
Please have your agent remit the proper price (less its commission)

About Our Systems

Because of its small size, MIT SMR has some oddities in its back-end infrastructure. Please be aware that:

  • We track and service journal subscriptions using an off-site fulfillment service bureau
  • We manage e-mail bulletins using a Web delivery vendor
  • We conduct article sales and service from our office, using an MIT shopping cart on the site
  • We partner with an MIT Web team to manage our site
While we have done our best to get these systems to talk to each other, the transfer of data is not always seamless. For example, if you “register” while in the article shopping cart, you have not “registered” for subscriber online access—those are two different things.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience.
